Laptops in the desert

In 1975 the Spanish left Western Sahara and the Moroccan kingdom occupied it. Those amongst the Sahrawi who wished to live independently moved to the outskirts of Tindouf, where Algeria has given the Sahrawi people a stretch of land so they could reunite their people, rebuild their resistance.

Many refugee camps (all bearing names of the cities they left behind) make up a giant city state. A country living solely on external aid. An island in the middle of the biggest desert on earth.

Kwame and Partners is sponsoring a programme to help increase digital literacy amongst Sahrawi school children. The purpose of the programme is also to look at new pedagogic ways to teach through a computer. How can one better the OLPC software as well as hardware? What other small innovation steps can we propose to improve OLPC.

The Sahrawis will continue to fight in order to re-conquer their occupied land. Through technology however, they can conquer lands that span much beyond Western Sahara, or their present day Tindouf. They will expand through the domain of the connected being.
